URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS (UTIs) IN WOMEN. AN UNRESOLVED PROBLEM

Thursday 4 November. 19:00–21:00 Hotel NH Abascal Madrid José Abascal, 47 (Hotel car park at no. 43) Speakers Dr Ángel Aguarón (Universidad Complutense) Dr Manuel Albi (FJD) Dr Ignacio Bugella (Madrid City Council) Dr Raquel García (Getafe Hospital) Dr Miguel Ángel Huertas (Getafe Hospital) Dr Manuel Marcos (HM Hospitales) Dr Carmen Pingarrón (Quirón Hospital) Dr Silvia Poyo (Quirón Hospital) Dr Pepe Rojo (Getafe Hospital) Dr Ignacio Cristóbal (Hospital Clínico) Dr Fernando Aznar (FEMM Clinic) State of the Art

UTIs are very common infections, with an incidence of some 150 million cases a year worldwide. They are more prevalent in women than in men: an estimated 50–70% of women will experience one of these infections at least once in their lifetime. UTIs have become one of the most frequent reasons for clinical consultation, and roughly a third of the women affected experience recurrences. Antibiotics are the mainstay recommended for both treatment and prophylaxis of UTIs. Some products of natural or non-pharmacological origin are also available, used mainly to prevent recurrence or as adjuvants to antibiotics. These products have certainly earned a place in the current therapeutic arsenal for managing UTIs, despite their modest efficacy, on the strength of their few side effects and good tolerability. UTIs nevertheless show a high reinfection rate that varies by age group and is associated with complications in treatment. These reinfections entail continued antibiotic use and therefore the emergence of bacterial resistance, estimated at some 670,000 cases a year in the European Union alone, with around 37,000 associated deaths. Several adverse effects linked to antibiotic use have also been described, such as kidney damage and changes in the microbiota and the immune system. We are therefore facing an Unmet Clinical Need.

Are there currently other therapeutic alternatives that could help us solve this problem?
